Finalists of the Regional stage of the Global Competition on Design for the Future determined
In mid-June, the expert jury selected 23 finalist teams to participate in the in-person Regional Final of the Global Competition on Design for the Future, which will take place on July 9 and 10 in Moscow. Investment in the Future Charitable Foundation organizes the competition in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan (EECA); Moscow City University (MCU) is a partner.
23 teams of students from higher education establishments taking specialty, master’s, bachelor’s and postgraduate programs (including PhD doctorates) from Russia (12 teams), Belarus (five teams), Turkmenistan (two teams), Uzbekistan (two teams), Kyrgyzstan (one team), Kazakhstan (one team) made it to the final.
102 teams from 86 universities in the EECA region submitted applications to participate in the Design for the Future competition. 74 projects made it to the qualification phase, where the participants proposed ideas in one of the three tracks:
- artificial intelligence (AI) for education,
- artificial intelligence (AI) for society,
- artificial intelligence (AI) for science.
The teams’ projects were evaluated by 17 experts from Sber, Moscow City University (MSU), UNESCO, foreign agencies, institutes and other companies. MCU, a project partner, helped design the criteria and engage the experts.
Criteria for selection of finalist projects
- Understanding the problem. The project should focus on solving a clearly identified specific problem. It should analyze the systemic causes of the problem and its impact on specific groups.
- Spirit of innovations. The solution must demonstrate originality and foresight. It should propose breakthrough concepts, methods or approaches.
- Technology for a good cause. The solution should responsibly use new technologies, in particular artificial intelligence. Technology capacity must be in harmony with human-centered values, social impact and ethical considerations.
- Application potential. The solution should contain a clear and feasible implementation plan that can have a significant social, environmental or scientific impact. It also needs to be scalable and resilient.
- Presentation and expressiveness. The project should clearly describe the basic concept, design process, and value. The visual component is also important.
All participants are invited to take part in the Regional Final, which will be held in Moscow on-site on July 9 and 10 at the Moscow City University. During these two days, the teams will defend their projects in front of experts and prove their benefits for education (15 projects), society (five projects), and science (three projects). AI experts will deliver short lectures to the finalists and answer their questions.
Based on the teams’ performances, the jury will select two winners who will participate in the World Final that will take place in Beijing in October this year. The Student World Forum will be held as part of the Competition final.
